Community Service - Opportunities and Pitfalls
Challenges
We live in a globalized world which closes ranks in some areas, while building stone walls in others. The borders are abolished where it redounds to our advantage and simultaneously the same borders become more and more impenetrable for others. The lopsided, mainly economic, global relationships not only cause increasing social distinctions, but also produce cultural stereotypes because we are lacking of intercultural skills to deal with a more complex cultural environment.
What can YOUth do?
Would you like to gain an own impression of different realities and immerge in a distinct environment instead of swimming on the surface of mainstream stereotypes? Are you eager to follow your ideals where your commitment is most needed?
Presentation description
This workshop aims to discuss community service as one possible answer to the designated challenges. In doing so, we focus on the individual and global risks or benefits of community service. In our concept, the intercultural encounter is at least as important as the concrete social commitment. Therefore, the discussion will take place in a «World Café» where we can easily tap into collective wisdom. We arrange several small groups, where topics can be discussed, while sitting on different coffee tables. The results of each group discussion will be shared afterwards in the whole group. A new round starts with a new question when participants move from one table to the next and interact. The topics are not set strictly in advance which allows us to adapt to your ideas and needs. In a final presentation the facilitators, who both spent a community service with AFS, will share their personal experiences with you and answer the questions that emerged during the «World Café» or give you some practical hints and advice for the organization of your personal engagement abroad.
