Evolution of Violent Conflicts

– youths' view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Conflicts in economy, society and politics concern all of us. The complexity of present day conflicts demands sustained engagement of governments, NGOs and the world public. So it is crucial to discuss different strategies to solve conflicts and to develop a „culture of conflict“.

In this workshop, specialists in conflict analysis will give an introduction to the central matters of modern conflict analysis. Modes of conflict solution applied by governments, international organisations and multinational corporations will be presented. Thereby understanding will be raised of the causes and dynamics of violent conflicts in general, and especially of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The objective of the workshop is to inform the participants about possibilities of getting involved in the search for a peaceful solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In order to show what involvement can get moving, already existing projects with and for young people in the region will be presented.

We are in contact with the following specialists and organisations to clarify the details of their involvement in the workshop:

Nimala Karoufeh

Ms. Nimala Kharoufeh is a young Palestinian living in Jerusalem. She is dedicated to empowering youth and women in politics; she is a non-violence activist and conflict resolution trainer, as well as a project coordinator at a number of Non Governmental Organizations.

Alexis Keller from the Geneva Initiative  - Palestinian Conflict Peace Agreement (GI)

Alexis Keller is Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Geneva. He is a former fellow of the Carr Centre for Human Rights Policy at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. From 2002 to 2004, Alexis Keller participated actively in negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians that led to the Geneva Accord. In April 2003, he was appointed by the Swiss Foreign Minister to serve as special representative for the Middle East peace process. He held this post until January 2004.   The Geneva Initiative is especially interesting for this workshop, as this summer it co-organized a joint Israeli-Palestinian young leadership seminar.
